Greetings from Nagagami Lodge !

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our guests who came to Nagagami Lodge in 2005! We had a terrific summer and we are very excited to see all of you again in 2006. We are very grateful that so many of you have taken the time to write us with comments and suggestions, some of which are noted in the 'guest comments' portion of this website. You can read it in our 'Fishing Blog' or in the Fall 2005 edition of theThe Tracker, Michigan Chapter, Safari Club International magazine. We thought you might like to read it as we are sure many of you will be able to relate to his experience.

Catch of the Day ...

Who could ask for a better summer?... Hot, Hot and more Hot! And the fishing wasn't bad either! Although the water levels were lower this year than most... by about 2 feet, the fishing still proved itself. The largest northern reported, was caught by Don Deboer, weighing in at 22 Lbs, 44" long and a belly on it the size of a small loon. The Hurley/Fenstemaker group caught a total of 1365 fish in 7 days (but who's counting), and mostly right out front of Nagagami Lodge. Although some had to go into the frying pan as tasty delights, obviously most went back to 'fight' another day. The largest walleye reported was caught by Harry Hucklebury, at 32 ½ " and weighing in at 10 ½ Lbs. We can't forget to mention the 28" walleye caught on Bill Malewitz's 16 foot cane pole..., right off our dock!, or the 38" northern, Debbie Seniff caught on her little 'blue gill' rod. My mouth is watering just thinking of the feed the Johnson party must of had with their two stringers of yellow perch, all between 9" to 12 ½ "! Wow, what a summer!

Bill MalewitzHONORARY GUEST

He's a Poet...Does He Know It?

Behold the fisherman
He riseth up early in the morning
And desturbeth the whole household.

Mighty are his preparations
He goeth forth full of hope
and when the day is far spent,
He returneth smelling of strong drink
And the truth is not in him.

Poem written by Mr. Bill Malewitz. Put to memory in 9th grade. He says his poems have been a guide to all learned thereafter. Bill, his family and friends joined us, on August 7th, one day after his 89th birthday!

SHIP SHAPE

Yes, we are proud to say , reservations are taking shape nicely, for 2006! We are very fortunate to have many of you returning from 2005. With this in mind, we thought it only fair to remind everyone, that if you have not already done so, we do require a confirmation by the end of December. We will be attending three sport shows, and accepting bookings at these events. It is extremely important to us, that you have the opportunity to hold your favorite week, before we begin our tour this winter.

Wild Wildlife

Merlin (falcon)Throughout the spring and summer, our guests witnessed the many natural splendors of wildlife that beautiful Nagagami has to offer. We hear many reports of the playful Otters, Osprey, Bald Eagles even Moose and the occasional Bear.

During the second week of August, we were very fortunate to have two guests that were very interested in the wildlife on Nagagami Lake. They were entertained by all the different species of birds, ducks and otters. They were particularly intrigued by the small falcon like birds, appropriately named the Merlin. In their letter to us, they wrote:

"Back at the Lodge, just North of the fish cleaning house, near the shore, we saw two aggressive little falcons driving off an interloping crow. We saw more of these little falcons in Pike Alley, one harassing an Osprey. They were amazingly fast fliers, and seemed to rule the birds of the shoreline. I didn't know what this little falcon is, so I looked them up when I returned home. The name of the bird is appropriate: Merlin. Merlins are magical fliers, indeed! The bird book (See Sibley Guide, ) says: "This small, very fast falcon is found in wide-open space and open woods; it captures birds and insects in midair by a level sprint, finishing with abrupt turns." also "Small, compact, powerful, and very aggressive; wings short and pointed, always angular, most appear dark." "Voice: Alarm call rapid, accelerating series of strident notes, rising then falling, with quality like Killdeer but harsher twi twitwitwititititititit..." We heard this call often because they were always yelling at the other birds on the lake! Size is about 10" long with 2-foot wingspan; look for those pointed wings...
I had never seen a Merlin, now we've seen many, what a treat."

We thought some of you would be equally entertained by these rare birds. "Thank you" to Phil and Bill for writting such a detailed and complimentary letter to us.

Yak-Ity-Yak!! Please Talk Back!

A suggestion was made by a group of guests, better known as the Taylor Team, to create a chat room on our website. Many friendships have been made through weeks spent at Nagagami Lodge! Many times I'm sure you would like to 'chat' with friends that you have met here. This will be a perfect opportunity to get caught up on everyone fish tales and great experiences at Nagagami Lodge.

Your input is greatly appreciated!

We Want Your 2 cents Worth...

To everyone who took the time to write or phone with your compliments and suggestions, we'd like to take this opportunity to Thank You. We definitely like to hear your compliments, but we also realize it is very important to act on the areas that you feel, there is room to improve. During the 2005 season we used alot of elbow grease. Can you say 'varnish'? Yes, we used about 15 gallons worth. Everything was sanded first, then varnished. The boats, the cabins, the lodge, the window frames, and the handrails. A little work, makes a big difference! The water system is up and working faithfully and we're sure you all appreciated the ice machine in this year's heat! We will continue to do the routine maintenance and grounds upkeep that makes Nagagami Lodge so beautiful.

Here are a few items you can look forward to during next year's fishing vacation:

  • A new dock will be in place for the 2006 season.
  • As the majority of our guest are environmentally friendly, new rubber landing nets were a suggestion made by many... they will definately promote catch and release as they are much more friendly to the 'big ones'!
  • Several requests have been made for the tuck and tackle shop be better equipped. We will be updating some of the latest and more popular tackle. It is always difficult for us to know exactly what will be desired in the little store.

Anyone have any ideas? Please let us know?
